INteresting article on public space

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/mar/29/communities

or rather the lack of it. Well worth a read peeps.

Steph, some of these ideas might be good to incorporate into vision/strategy?

Essentially it tallies nicely with what we set out to do in the first place (which is nice;-). It did make me think though that we should be clear about the programs within the areas of intervention in order to make it clear that they are a combo of community, education, performance, retail, live/work, etc giving maximum flexibility, allowing the community to grow organically and ultimately creating a resilient place... I was thinking particularly of the market on the north side, the arcade to the east and the centre to the south of the green.

This is an excellent article and the potential implications for the privatisation of public space is scary. I read two amazing books on holiday that relate to this. The first was 'Who runs Britain?' by Robert Peston about the rise of private equity and the super-mega rich, many of whom live in London and have a significant influence over our politics (See Cash for honours scandal). The second book was 'Blackwater' by Jeremy Scahill about the rise of private security contractors/mercenaries many of whom are in Iraq and Afganistan (where they are immune from prosecution and are not counted on the death statistics), but also operate in domestic situations such as hurricane Katrina (where they evacuated and guarded the homes of the super rich). With the rise of the super/mega rich and the ability to hire your own army, I would not be entirely surprised to see the super rich, in a world of increasing 'terror', set out to create their own independent 'states'.

How about that for privatisation of public space...Or maybe I am just very jetlagged.

Will incorporate into vision etc....
